about

This project is essentially a collaboration of two musicians who live hundreds of miles apart, and by email, were able to combine their talents for this digital release on a net label. Dan recorded his instrument at his home studio, sent the files to Ken, with some basic instructions about how he imagined the gongs would sound, and Ken then did his recordings at his home studio, and matched his instruments to the existing tracks, synchronizing the two into one complete album. They did not compose together in person until the recording of Lunge a year later.

Frequency Drift is a collection of seven collaborative compositions for double bass and tam-tams. The compositions were created sequentially: the double bass parts were composed and recorded first, after which the tam-tam parts were recorded and mixed with the bass parts. The appeal of the project lay in the opportunity to create work exploring the compositional possibilities opened up by the subtle timbral dissonance between the double bass’s bowed strings and the tam-tams’ struck and rubbed metal. Last post on Free Music Archive had this album as having 18,467 listens and 3,804 downloads.

Recorded and assembled in Silver Spring, MD and Cuyahoga Falls, OH, during the summer 2015.
